INDONESIAN VISAS & ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
STUDENT VISAS
A STUDENT VISA is not required to study with Language Studies Indonesia.
The LSI Admissions Office can not assist prospective students in attaining Student Visas.
Indonesia only issues STUDENT VISAS to foreign citizens registered as full-time students at Indonesian Universities.
Students enrolled in short-term educational programs (such as the LSI Program)
are welcome to study under a 30-DAY VISA-ON-ARRIVAL (VOA) or 60-DAY TOURIST VISA.
FOR VISITS OF 30 DAYS OR LESS . . .
Citizens of most countries DO NOT need to make
advance arrangements to visit Indonesia.
Free 30-Day Non-Extendable
VISA-ON-ARRIVAL (VOA)
A free 30-day, non-extendable VISA-ON-ARRIVAL (VOA) is issued "automatically" to citizens of most countries upon arrival at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta (or another “official gateway” in Indonesia). See list of 169 "Free Visa" countries below.
There are no advance arrangements required for this VOA, and there is no cost involved.
At Customs, simply present :
-
A PASSPORT.
The Passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from your date of arrival in Indonesia.
The Passport must contain at least one completely blank page.
-
A RETURN (OR ONWARD) AIRLINE TICKET
with a departure date within 30 days of your arrival in Indonesia.
Once you have been approved for entry, you will be issued your free 30-day, non-extendable VISA-ON-ARRIVAL (VOA).
That's all there is to it!
IMPORTANT NOTE
Your date of entry is counted as your first day,
and your date of exit is counted as your last day.
Therefore, you have only 28 days
between your date of arrival and your date of departure.
Extending visits beyond the Visa expiration date
Students wishing to extend their stays typically do a "visa run." That is . . .
They EXIT AND RE-ENTER THE COUNTRY prior to the expiration of their Visas, securing a new 30-Day VISA-ON-ARRIVAL (VOA)
upon re-entry.
Commonly, students book a return-ticket to and from Singapore, often returning to Indonesia within the same day.
(Flights to/from Singapore are about one hour and currently range from USD $150-200.)
Free 30-Day, Extendable
VISA-ON-ARRIVAL (VOA)
Not Recommended
A 30-day, extendable VISA-ON-ARRIVAL (VOA) is available to citizens of 62 countries upon arrival at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta (or another “official gateway” in Indonesia).
With an Extendable VOA, the student has the option to extend her/his Visa for an additional 30 days, without leaving the country.
As of June 2016, the cost of an Extendable VOA is USD $35 per person, payable in US Dollars or another major currency. Payment may be made in cash or by credit card at the VOA PAYMENT COUNTER after clearing Customs.

Students DO NOT typically opt for the Extendable VOA, for the following reasons :
1. A Student must commit the entire last week of her/his 4-week stay to extending the Visa.
The process involves multiple trips to an unpleasant and congested Immigration Office to wait in long lines.
2. The cost of the Extendable VOA is USD $35, but there is an additional $35 charge for the extension . . .
bringing the total cost to $70. Add to this, multiple taxi fares (to get to and from the Immigration Office)
are the final expense for the VOA and its renewal can be as high as $110 to $120!
3. For most students, a "visa run" is much more appealing. One can fly to Singapore (an hour away),
do some shopping, then return to Indonesia within the day and secure a new FREE VOA upon re-entry.
And the cost of a return flight to/from Singapore is generally only USD $150 to $200 - not a great deal
more than the $110 to $120 expense involved to purchase and renew an Extendable VOA.
IMPORTANT NOTE
If you know in advance that you would like to be in Indonesia for longer than 30 days . . .
We recommend that you visit an Indonesian Embassy
in your home-country (before coming to Indonesia) to secure a
60-DAY TOURIST VISA.
It is a quick and simple process, and you will avoid the complication of
extending your Visa after your arrival in Indonesia.
60-Day
TOURIST VISA
A 60-DAY TOURIST VISA is available to students who wish to stay in Indonesia longer than 30 days . . . but this Visa must be arranged at an Indonesian Embassy outside of Indonesia (prior to arrival in the country).
The cost of a 60-Day Tourist Visa varies from country to country, but it is usually about USD $70 to $75. (Please check with the Indonesian Embassy in your home-country for the exact figure.)
At an Indonesian Embassy outside the country, you must present :
-
A PASSPORT.
The Passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from your date of arrival in Indonesia.
The Passport must contain at least one completely blank page.
-
A RETURN (OR ONWARD) AIRLINE TICKET
with a departure date within 60 days of your arrival in Indonesia.
-
THE NAME AND ADDRESS OF THE HOTEL/GUESTHOUSE YOU WILL STAY AT
OR THE FAMILY YOU WILL STAY WITH DURING YOUR STAY IN INDONESIA.
IMPORTANT TIPS
Before going to an Indonesian Embassy in your home country to secure a 60-Day Tourist Visa,
we recommend that you :
1. Book a flight and hotel with an online travel agent.
2. Print out the Flight Itinerary and Hotel Confirmation but DO NOT PAY for the flight and/or hotel.
3. Take a copy of the Flight Itinerary and Hotel Confirmation (together with your Passport)
to the Indonesian Embassy, and hand them in.
4. You will be asked to return in about 3 days to pick-up your Passport and 60-Day Tourist Visa.
5. Once you have your Tourist Visa in hand, you are free to pay for your flight and hotel . . .
or to make changes to your flight and hotel arrangements.
You must enter Indonesia within 90 days of the date the Visa is issued.
(After 90 days, the Visa will NOT be accepted on arrival in Indonesia.)

KEEP IT SIMPLE . . .
Use a Hotel or Guesthouse as the "official address" for your Indonesian visit.
Students planning to stay with friends or family are often asked for additional documentation
(such as a 'Letter of Invitation' from the host), thus slowing down the process.
Indonesia's Free 30-Day, Non-Extendable VISA-ON-ARRIVAL (VOA)
is available to citizens of the following 169 countries.

There are no vaccinations required to visit Indonesia
(unless you will visit a "jungle" region).
The Indonesian Capital of Jakarta is the world’s ninth most-populous city.
Relative to Western cities, entering Indonesia through the Indonesian Capital is a straight-forward process
that might even be described as “a pleasure."
Students are warmly received by the gentle people of Indonesia, and are granted a level of respect
which would be uncommon at immigration points in most countries.
We hope you enjoy your stay.
