Frequently Asked Questions

At LSI, will I learn how to speak Indonesian formally, or do you teach every-day colloquial "street" language?

LSI STUDENTS ARE NOT TAUGHT "FORMAL INDONESIAN", AND THEY ARE NOT TAUGHT VERNACULAR ("SLANG") INDONESIAN.

LSI delivers instruction in "STANDARD" INDONESIAN, which is applicable in all situations - social and professional.

" Slang" Indonesian is something students pick up "on the street" as they discover ways to "scale back" their language when dealing with vendors, parking attendants, etc. The job of the School is to ensure that students are taught standard Indonesian . . . so they do not embarrass themselves by using "street language" in the everyday contexts of their lives - at the office, at hotels and restaurants, at conferences, etc.

Is learning Bahasa Indonesia as easy as people say?

YES, BAHASA INDONESIA LEARNING IS RELATIVELY EASY AT THE BEGINNER LEVEL.

Unlike other Asian languages, Bahasa Indonesia uses Roman or Latin script; pronunciation is generally straightforward for English speakers (as it is not a tonal language like Chinese); and its lack of complicated grammatical structures (such as verb tenses) make mastery of simple conversation relatively painless.

But with that said, Bahasa Indonesia becomes considerably more difficult at the Intermediate level, when students encounter those "notorious" Indonesian prefixes and suffixes, and begin to grapple with the language's more complex structures.

It's kind of like 'badminton.' It's easier than tennis when you're starting and having fun. But it's just as difficult to become a " good badminton player" as it is to become a " good tennis player."

How long will it take to learn to speak Indonesian?

THAT'S UP TO YOU. FOR SOME, FLUENCY CAN BE ATTAINED IN 2 TO 4 MONTHS. FOR OTHERS IT CAN TAKE 9 TO 12 MONTHS.

THE SPEED AT WHICH YOU ATTAIN FLUENCY IS GENERALLY DETERMINED BY 2 FACTORS : (1) THE INTENSITY OF THE LESSON SCHEDULE YOU SET UP, AND (2) YOUR WILLINGNESS TO USE BAHASA INDONESIA IN YOUR DAILY LIFE.

LSI offers 6 Course Levels. Each Course Level is comprised of 13 ninety-minute classes. The entire Program (Foundations through Advanced) encompasses 78 ninety-minute classes (117 instructional hours).

If you were to take just 2 classes per week, it would take you 6.5 weeks to complete 1 Course Level and 3 months and a week to graduate the entire program as a "proficient user of Bahasa Indonesia.

If you were to take 3 classes a week, 1 Course Level would take 1 month to complete, and you would graduate the Advanced in 6 months.

Intensive students usually take 5 classes per week (1 class per day), completing 1 level every 2.5 weeks, and the entire Program in only 3.5 months.

Those who need to learn at "lightning speed" typically take 10 classes per week (2 classes per day), completing 1 level every 1.5 weeks, and the entire Program in just under 2 months.

BUT CLASSES ALONE WILL NOT LEAD TO RAPID LANGUAGE FLUENCY. Those who are able to achieve fluency swiftly are those with a strong willingness to USE THE LANGUAGE - those who are willing to leave each class and put their newly-acquired language skills to immediate use in the everyday contexts of their lives.

SELAMAT BELAJAR! (Happy Learning!)
