Yes. Founded in 2007, LSI is a unique Department of Education School, licensed by the government to provide specialised programs in Bahasa Indonesia (the Indonesian language). LSI is recognised as Indonesia's leading school for the study of Bahasa Indonesia, and our programs have received multiple awards from Indonesia's Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education.

At LSI, we devote more time and effort to the recruitment and development of world-class Language Instructors than we do any other aspect of our operation. LSI’s faculty is comprised wholly of university-accredited Language Instructors, all of whom are fully trilingual, speaking English, an Indonesian local language, and, of course, Bahasa Indonesia.

ALL LSI INSTRUCTION IS DELIVERED THROUGH PRIVATE TUTORIAL SESSIONS. Private Sessions may be delivered to individuals or to small collegial groups/families (2 to 4 learners). Private instruction allows for highly customised language training, designed to meet the specific needs of an individual learner (or small group of learners). If extremely rapid language acquisition is the goal, then LSI's Private Tutorial Sessions are the obvious choice.

If you live in Jakarta or are a visitor, you may study ONSITE AT YOUR LOCATION. Your Instructor will come to you at your office or home (if you are a local expat) or at your hotel or guesthouse (if you are a visitor). We deliver our classes online (face-to-face, teacher-led) if you live outside Jakarta or outside of Indonesia. We provide our online courses worldwide.

Yes! Regardless of where you live, you may set up: - Teacher-Led Online Sessions with an accredited Instructor from LSI in Jakarta. - Online Sessions are face-to-face (with the use of webcam), and the course content is identical to what is taught at our Jakarta school.

Our lesson duration is a minimum of 90 minutes or more.

Yes. LSI students design their own Weekly Session Schedules, studying as intensively as they wish - from 2 sessions per week to 2 sessions per day. If you are not able to commit to a fixed Weekly Session Schedule, you may purchase Session Credits and schedule your sessions on a week-to-week basis. Sessions may be scheduled Monday through Sunday between 9am and 9pm.

Yes. You may cancel and reschedule a session by notifying LSI by email or WhatsApp, one business day prior to the session, no later than 4pm (Jakarta time). PLEASE NOTE: The number of sessions you are allowed to reschedule depends on the Weekly Session Schedule you set up. See STUDY IN JAKARTA and STUDY ONLINE for details. Beyond the "allowable reschedules" of your chosen Weekly Session Schedule, all cancelled sessions are charged as sessions delivered.

Yes. If you have had previous experience with Bahasa Indonesia, you will complete LSI's PRE-PROGRAMME ASSESSMENT. This will enable us to customise your program based on your needs, and not waste time covering material you have already mastered.

Yes. Your tutorial sessions will be 90 minutes and every 13th session of your Language Program will serve as an Assessment Checkpoint. During these sessions, your Instructor will have you complete several specific tasks designed to establish your language proficiency, and then issue a Written Evaluation of how much you have developed since your previous Assessment. Certificates of Completion are issued at key points along the way.

BAHASA INDONESIA IS THE SOLE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF INDONESIA. With more than 750 native languages spoken across 17,000 islands, what unifies Indonesia is its single national language. To be functional in the country, you must be able to communicate in Bahasa Indonesia.

At LSI, we do not teach FORMAL INDONESIAN and we do not teach "SLANG INDONESIAN." WE TEACH “STANDARD INDONESIAN," which is applicable in all situations – social and professional. Slang Indonesian is something our local students will pick up “on the street” as they deal with vendors, parking attendants, etc. The job of the School is to ensure you learn to communicate in Standard Indonesian, so you don't embarrass yourself by using “street language” in the everyday contexts of our life – at the office, at hotels and restaurants, at conferences, etc.

IT IS RELATIVELY EASY TO MASTER SIMPLE CONVERSATION AT THE BEGINNER LEVEL. Unlike other Asian languages, Bahasa Indonesia uses the Latin alphabet. Pronunciation is straightforward for English speakers (as it is not a tonal language like Chinese). And there are no verb tenses to be learned. BUT DON'T BE DECEIVED. Standard Indonesian is as complex as any other language, and attaining true proficiency requires dedication and effort.

THAT ALL DEPENDS ON YOU!!! You may be able to make considerable progress in just weeks, or you may still be struggling with the language after several months. THE SPEED OF YOUR PROGRESS WILL BE DETERMINED BY 2 FACTORS: 1. THE INTENSITY OF YOUR STUDY SCHEDULE: Of course, students who study with their Instructor 5 times per week will develop faster than students who study just 1 time per week. The more hours you spend studying the language during a concentrated period, the more rapidly you will progress. 2. YOUR WILLINGNESS TO USE THE LANGUAGE OUTSIDE OF YOUR TUTORIAL SESSIONS. Language instruction alone will not lead to rapid language fluency. Students who develop their skills quickly are those who are willing to leave each language session and immediately begin USING THE LANGUAGE in their everyday lives.
